areas resemble those in the third world. This expression originated in the
mid-1900s, at first denoting those countries in Asia and Africa that were not
aligned with either the Communist bloc nations or the non-Communist Western nations.
Because they were for the most part poor and underdeveloped, the term was
transferred to all countries with those characteristics, and later still to poorer
groups within a larger prevailing culture.

"THE 3RD WORLD" WRITING CONTEST
OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE...
Win $1500 by Writing a 2 to 3 page Essay!

In an effort to promote and sustain the writing and critical thinking
skills of the younger generations, underground rapper and
revolutionary, Immortal Technique, is inviting high school students to
write essays about their perceptions and/or experiences in regards to
the United States' relations to the third world in general, or a third
world country/countries in particular. The essays must be original
work and must be limited to 500-750 words. Immortal Technique will
read the essays and choose the top three.

Too often students are bogged down with necessary after school jobs
and do not have the free time needed to cultivate their writing and
analytical thinking skills. Recognizing that these skills are crucial,
Immortal Technique would like to award the writers of the top three
essays with money meant to allow them more free time to reflect on the
state of the world and to develop their writing skills. The essay
contest is meant to demonstrate to the youth that their writing and
critical thinking skills can generate an income for them and their
families.

Prizes:
1st Prize- $1,500
2nd Prize- $1,000
3rd Prize- $500

Eligibility:
This contest is open to high school students nationwide enrolled in
grades nine through twelve. Seniors graduating May-June of 2008 are
still welcomed to submit an essay.

Requirements:
-Must be between 500-750 words. (2 -3 pages)
-Only one submission per student.
-Submissions will be admitted until July 8, 2008.
-Essay must be the original work of the student.
-Essay must be about U.S. relations to a third-world country or countries.
-Please make sure you include a cover letter with your submission.
-Your essay should be double-spaced whether type-written or neatly
hand-written.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS:

To submit your essay by mail, please staple a cover page to the front
of your essay. The cover page should include your name, address, phone
number, the name of your school, and grade level. Then mail the essay

Cormega has truly risen from the ashes of the fire of street hustling. In and out of jail, he gained concrete street credibility for his actions as a drug dealer and a hardcore emcee. In the song "One Love" by Nas, Cormega is named in a verbal prison letter. One of his first singles 'Dead Man Walking' was banned for being too violent. He was signed to Def Jam but his album 'The Testament' was never released. He was the original member of The Firm (Nas, AZ, and Foxy Brown) and he rocked a classic verse on "Affirmative Action" from the "It Was Written" LP by Nas. Unfortunately, Cormega was replaced by Nature because he refused to sign a production deal. Many people yearned for his solo albums and fans only had collaborations and bootlegs to listen to. Songs like "What's Your Poison" by Mobb Deep and "Three" by Prodigy were instant classics. Cormega was never afraid to speak his mind either. He gained even more exposure when a heated beef began with his once friend, Nas. Calling him out on many songs, Cormega gained more of the respect like 50 Cent did when he beefed Ja Rule. Nas did strike back with "Destroy And Rebuild" from his "Stillmatic" album. These days, beef between Nas and Cormega is not even a topic anymore. Eventually, Cormega released his debut solo album "The Realness" on his own label, Legal Hustle Records. With very little guest appearances, Cormega brought back the concept of solid albums to hip-hop. Short, sweet, and not flooded with BS, "The Realness" was a gritty slice of reality from Queensbridge. He missed the sophomore jinx with his classic 2nd album "The True Meaning". Every song on "The True Meaning" was incredible. From "Verbal Graffiti" to "Therapy", the album was almost perfect (and it only had one guest emcee, Large Professor). Fast forward to 2004, Cormega returns with his album "Legal Hustle". Packed with guest appearances, Cormega's "Legal Hustle" is more of a showcase for the talent from his label even though Cormega is on almost every single song. While many unknowns like Dona and Miz are on the LP, many well-respected artists do collaborations too. Ghostface Killah truly rocks the microphone on the mind-blowing "Tony / Montana", produced by newcomers, The Feil Brothers. Firm member, AZ also rocks the mic on the Emile produced "Redemption". M.O.P. brings chaos on "Let It Go" as they show their frustration about how their album is taking so long to come out on Roc-A-Fella Records. There are even odd collaborations like the reggae inspired "Dangerous" with Vybez Kartel and Unda P or "Deep Blue Seas" with West Coast emcees Kurupt and Jayo Felony. Cormega fans will not be disappointed. On a hot evening in June, I sat down with the legendary Queens emcee and discussed drugs, the record industry, collaborations, and more. Cormega gives a voice to the kid in the projects, the guys who hang out in front of the corner store, the guys who sell drugs in the street, and the men incarcerated behind bars. While Cormega may be hustling legally, he is hustling for the people.

"That White Girl", is a coming of age story traveled by a white girl
who flirts with the color lines. In the process Amber gets allured by
the call of thug life and becomes immersed in the world of gangs and
graffiti. Amber twirls through tales of risky crimes and party times
until illusion and reality collide resulting in a painful tragedy.
White Girl explores the humiliations and triumphs that occur when an
outsider breaks boundaries and becomes involved with the art, politics,
and lives of people perceived as different. On a more personal level,
the book chronicles Amber's inner struggle for identity and
self-expression, and ultimately her transformation from gang-banger to
Hip-Hop activist.

JENA 6 Petition

The Town of Jena: One of those little towns is Jena, Louisiana, a 3,000-strong, 86% white community nested in central Louisiana's LaSalle Parish. Several hundred teenagers live in the town, and Jena's only high school, unsurprisingly named Jena High School, is public. This means that, under the Brown v. Board of Education precedent, it's integrated. Well, most of it, anyway.
Nooses on the Tree: On the campus of Jena High School is a big, shady tree. According to students and others from the local community, it was understood that the tree's shade was for white kids. A black teenager attempted to sit under it on August 31st, 2006; accounts vary as to whether or not he was prevented from doing so. The next day, three nooses were found hanging in its branches. The white students who admitted to hanging the nooses were suspended for three days.
Integrating the Shade: Several days after the noose incident, a group of black students gathered and sat under the tree in protest. White students' parents called the police, and LaSalle County's white district attorney stormed the campus with armed police and gave an impromptu lecture to the black students who had gathered under the tree. 'I could end your lives with the stroke of a pen,' he reportedly told them.
The Jena Six: On December 4th, 2006, a fight broke out on the campus of Jena High School. During the struggle, a white student was beaten. He was taken to the hospital, but was released shortly thereafter and attended another school function that night. The six black students were rounded up by police and charged with attempted second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit second-degree murder. Each of the students faced up to 100 years in prison. Jena High's ordinary penalty for a fight at school is three days' suspension.
Latest Developments: On June 28th, 2007, Jena Six defendant Mychal Bell was convicted on charges of second-degree battery and conspiracy to commit second-degree battery. He was convicted by an all-white jury, and his attorney--a public defender--called no witnesses on his behalf. He will be sentenced on September 20th, and faces up to 22 years in prison for the schoolyard fight.
